CITI Program
It is important that the researchers are properly informed in University and federal policies and standards. The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program (CITI) is a leading online training program maintained by the University of Miami. It offers curricula in human, animal, and biohazardous research, export controls, research security, conflicts of interest, laboratory safety, and the responsible conduct of research. Certificates of completion are provided to those who complete course modules within this training program.
Who Has to Complete CITI Courses?
All study personnel listed on a research study protocol, regardless of their position, must complete CITI modules related to the research. Investigators, research nurses, coordinators, students, technicians working with identifiable data, and faculty advisors would all need to obtain CITI certification.
Which CITI Courses Must Be Completed?
CITI Modules that are appropriate for the type of research should be completed. This means anyone working directly with animals, human participants or with identifiable data or biological specimens for research purposes. Consider the following examples:
- Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing & Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy, and all medical science researchers should take the biomedical basic course.
- The Graduate School, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Communications, Law, Divinity, and Social Work and all socio-behavioral and humanities researchers should take the social science basic course.
In addition, all study personnel must complete the Export Controls, Information Privacy and Security, and Conflict of Interest modules. Refresher Courses should only be completed if the basic course was completed and the certification for that course has expired.
