Research Integrity
Howard University is committed to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct in research. The Research Integrity Program aims to prevent research misconduct, promote transparency, and ensure that research activities are conducted with honesty and accountability. It encompasses the Research Misconduct Committee as well as policies, procedures, and training to foster a culture of integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Research Misconduct Committee
Research misconduct undermines the credibility of scholarly work and violates the university’s core values. To maintain a culture of academic honesty, the university enforces strict policies and procedures to investigate allegations of misconduct. Faculty, staff, and students are expected to conduct research responsibly, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and proper attribution in all scholarly activities. The ORRC has the responsibility to protect the integrity of research conducted at Howard University through its support of the Research Misconduct Committee.
The Research Misconduct Committee:

Encourages researchers to adhere to ethical principles and professional standards in all aspects of their work.

Fosters an environment where researchers openly share their methods, data, and findings to facilitate reproducibility and public trust.

supports Investigations and corrective actions related to non-compliance and misconduct.
Membership
The Research Misconduct Committee is composed of at least two Howard University practicing scientists from various academic units.
Meetings
The RCR Committee meets on an ad-hoc basis, when a relatable concern is raised.
Types of Research Misconduct

Fabrication – Making up data, results, or information and presenting them as real. This includes inventing research findings that were never conducted or observed.

Falsification – Manipulating research materials, equipment, processes, or data to misrepresent results. This includes altering or omitting data to make research appear more significant or misleading.

Plagiarism – Using another person’s ideas, words, or research without proper attribution. This includes copying text, data, or images without citation, as well as self-plagiarism (reusing one's own previous work without disclosure).
